Heck I would wear a dress that was literally green to my wedding if it meant saving the planet. It's good to know that people are "going green" in all aspects of their lives, not just the daily ones.

I never thought I would say this, but thank goodness for all those annoying reporters. They were able to expose the claim made by Liz Hurley as false. Don't talk the talk if you can't walk the walk or something like that as my friend used to say.

I agree with Leslie. I think that with an almost 10% decrease in the manatte population, their would be a greater concern over their protection. I also found it very interesting that you mentioned that the likely closing of power plants could hurt the manattes. I would have thought that the closing of power plants wouls help more survive because it would reduce the amount of pollution in the air and lead to better air quality. But as you explained it will most likely lead to cooler waters which manattes will be unable to survive in.

That is strange how a change of status could have that big of an effect on the view of animals. It shouldn't matter if the animal is endangered or threatened, we should take of them no matter what. If it is true that by changing the manitee status to threatened, people would care about them less, I hate to think of what else we would do with them. Especially, since people are already threatening the manitees lives on a daily basis with their speed boats ancd things.

This is definitely a creative idea, but I personally don't know if kids will go for it. I feel like there would have to be some other kind of benefit to having these animal sounds as ringtones, because some people might not like it. It's a good start though and maybe they will be able to figure something out that the kids today would consider "cool" and then also become more aware of the endangered species in our world.

Wow, weird, I actually just blogged about this same thing! We had been talking about how the Superbowl related to my Economics class yesterday, which gave me the idea of finding out how the Superbowl related to APES. I was trying to find some of the information on how much CO2 would absorb, but I couldn't find it, so great job on posting that. Pretty much everything else I have to say about this topic is in my blog, so I guess you could just check that out.

I was thinking about how I could relate the super bowl to an apes post but couldn't think of anything, but I'm glad you did. I agree with you and Camille that the idea is great and all but only 3.9% of the CO2 emitted will be absorbed by the newly planted trees. I also liked how you found out how many tons of Co2 are expected to be emitted from Sunday's super bowl. 500 tons is alot of Co2 and in the long run that will be more detrimental to the environment than the newly planted trees would be helpful.

I agree that planting all these trees won't really do much, but hey! It's better than nothing. And at least we're trying. Most Americans pay way more attention to the NFL in a couple months than environmental issues in their whole lives, and when they read about this they might get a clue, or at least be aware of some energy issues. There was also an article in grist about this:

"The Super Bowl has incorporated green elements for 14 years, but the upcoming game will be the first to offset its emissions. Such football-licious sustainability comes hot on the heels of other sporting events that have gone for the green, including an ethanol-fueled Indy 500, climate-neutral soccer World Cup, and recycle-happy Turin Olympics."

Maybe planting all these trees won't help in the big picture, but its the little gestures that make all the difference, right?

I had no idea that a wedding and a honeymoon trip put out that much carbon dioxide. And I agree, I dont think that they way to get people to reduce carbon dioxide emissions is to make them feel guilty. Frankly, I think that a lot of people in the US dont feel guilty about a lot of things, so why would they feel guilty about this.

I read an article about this recently too. I found it very interesting that windfarms were such a threat to birds. I had never really thought about that until I read the article. I think that it is a good idea to try out the windfarms because if they prove to be efficent then they could be an excellent alternate source of energy.
